What is Dry Ice Blasting?

At Frostworks Dry Ice Blasting, we take cleaning to a whole new level with an environmentally-friendly technology that uses the power of dry ice. By blasting solid carbon dioxide (CO₂) particles—better known as dry ice—at high speeds onto surfaces, we achieve incredible cleaning results without any of the usual mess or environmental harm.

Here’s how it works: Our specialised ICS IC310s machines propel dry ice particles with precision and force, creating an instant reaction on impact. As the dry ice hits the surface, it instantly sublimates (turns directly from a solid to a gas), creating a powerful thermal shock. This releases dirt, grease, oils, waxes, and even production residues without causing damage to the underlying surface. As the solid reverts back into a gas, it expands rapidly up to 800 times its original size, blasting away the contaminates. Plus, there’s no water, chemicals, or abrasives required—perfect for sensitive parts or environments where water simply isn’t an option

Our equipment lets us fine-tune every aspect of the process, from air pressure to nozzle selection, to suit each unique cleaning challenge. With the IC310s machines in our toolkit, we’re able to tackle tough grime with maximum efficiency.

One of the best parts? Our dry ice blasting process reduces downtime, as it often doesn’t require equipment to be dismantled, allowing industrial machinery to be cleaned in place. Not only does this save time, but it also helps extend the life of valuable assets by avoiding wear from abrasive methods

When it comes to eco-friendly, powerful, and non-invasive cleaning solutions, Frostworks Dry Ice Blasting is here to deliver outstanding results that protect both your equipment and the environment.

How Does Dry Ice Blasting Work?

Dry Ice Blasting works in a powerful, three-step process that delivers pristine, damage-free cleaning.

We load dry ice pellets up to 3mm in size into our advanced machines. Using compressed air, the machines propel the dry ice at high speeds through a precision nozzle, achieving the Kinetic Energy required to deeply clean surfaces. This high-velocity impact is essential for lifting even the toughest grime from surfaces.

Next comes Thermal Shock. As the dry ice particles collide with the surface, they create an instant thermal shock. With dry ice at a bone-chilling -78.5°C, there’s a sudden temperature difference that causes contaminants to contract and embrittle, breaking their grip on the surface. This rapid contraction loosens layers of stubborn dirt, grease, and residues, all without damaging the underlying material.

Finally, Sublimation takes place as the dry ice instantly transforms from solid to gas the moment it contacts the surface. This rapid expansion, which can increase to as much as 800 times its original volume, lifts and “blows” away debris, leaving the surface clean and residue-free—without any water, solvents, or secondary waste.

This three-step process allows us to deliver exceptional cleaning results across a range of industrial applications. With an approach that’s free from chemicals or abrasives, you can trust that your equipment and surfaces are cleaned safely, sustainably, and effectively with Frostworks.

How Does Dry Ice Blasting Compare to Sand Blasting?

When comparing dry ice blasting to sandblasting, the differences are clear—especially in terms of surface impact, environmental safety, and cleanup.

Sandblasting, while effective at stripping tough materials or heavy rust, can be harsh on surfaces. Its abrasive particles can wear down materials, cause micro-abrasions, and even damage sensitive parts over time. This approach often leaves surfaces in need of refinishing or repair, especially if used repeatedly. Moreover, sandblasting generates substantial dust and debris, which can be challenging to manage, especially in indoor or confined spaces. The cleanup process requires removing leftover sand particles, and the resulting airborne dust can pose respiratory hazards, demanding additional safety measures.

In contrast, dry ice blasting at Frostworks offers a gentle yet effective alternative. Instead of relying on abrasion, our process uses dry ice pellets that create a thermal shock on impact, loosening contaminants without touching the underlying material. The dry ice sublimates on contact, leaving no residue behind. This makes dry ice blasting not only safer for your surfaces but also far easier to clean up—no abrasive particles, no dust clouds, and no secondary waste.

For businesses needing reliable cleaning without the risk of surface damage, downtime, or extensive cleanup, dry ice blasting is the superior choice. With its eco-friendly and non-invasive benefits, it’s the preferred solution we’re proud to provide at Frostworks.

What Industries Can Dry Ice Blasting Be Used In?

Dry ice blasting is an incredibly versatile cleaning solution, making it ideal across a range of industries that need efficient, eco-friendly, and non-abrasive cleaning. At Frostworks, we work with clients from diverse sectors, each benefiting from the unique advantages dry ice blasting offers.

In automotive and transportation, dry ice blasting is perfect for cleaning components like engines, chassis, and interiors without risking surface damage or leaving residues. It’s a powerful tool for removing built-up grease, oil, and road grime from vehicles, including classics and high-value models where preservation is key. Dry ice blasting is also great for detailing and underbody cleaning, as it avoids moisture and abrasive damage that could lead to corrosion or wear. We also offer treatments from the Bilt-Hamber lineup of products for things like undersealing and rust conversion.

In food processing and manufacturing, maintaining cleanliness without contamination is essential, and dry ice blasting provides a safe, chemical-free cleaning method. Since dry ice is inherently sterile and doesn’t introduce water or solvents, it prevents bacterial growth and keeps equipment dry, clean, and ready to use almost immediately. Dry ice blasting easily removes food residues, oils, and built-up layers from machinery, conveyors, and packaging equipment, ensuring compliance with strict health and safety standards.

The electronics and electrical industry also benefits significantly from dry ice blasting. This sector requires cleaning solutions that won’t harm delicate components, cause short circuits, or leave conductive residues. Dry ice blasting can effectively remove dust, oils, and residues from circuit boards, electrical panels, and production equipment without creating moisture or abrasion, keeping sensitive electronics safe and operational.

In industrial and manufacturing settings, where machines run constantly and downtime is costly, dry ice blasting offers a non-invasive cleaning method. It allows machinery to be cleaned in place, reducing downtime and preventing the wear that often comes from abrasive cleaning. From heavy-duty equipment to delicate tools, dry ice blasting can remove residues like oil, grease, and paint without dismantling machines, letting businesses stay productive and efficient.

Historical restoration is another area where dry ice blasting shines. For delicate surfaces like stone, brick, or wood in historical buildings, dry ice blasting provides gentle yet effective cleaning. It can safely strip away graffiti, paint, mold, and grime without damaging fragile surfaces, helping to preserve the integrity of historic sites.
